How to Install Grass Plugs

Grass plugs are one way for people to improve their lawns without placing down new sod or seeding the lawn. Plugs that are placed properly will spread out and grow into a nice, plush, green lawn with proper care. Before you install the grass plugs, you must prep and prepare the soil. This is important if you are going to have healthy, growing plugs. There is a little more to planting plugs than just sticking them in the ground.

Things You'll Need

• Grass plugs
• Tape measure
• Plugger tool
• Starter fertilizer

Instructions

1. Water the soil. This will make it easier to work with the soil.

2. Use the plugger tool to make holes for the grass plugs in a checkerboard pattern. Measure 12 inches between each plug so they will have enough room to expand and grow.

3. Place the recommended amount of starter fertilizer in the hole (ask the nursery what they recommend for the fertilizer). Place the plug in the hole and tap down on the plug. Use the soil displaced by the plugger tool if you need a little more soil.

4. Water the grass plugs after planting. Continue watering once a day for 10 days, after which the plugs will be rooted firmly in the soil. Mow the grass after two weeks.

Tips & Warnings

• If you have many weeds, you may need to pull all the weeds or use an herbicide to kill them and wait the recommended time to plant the grass plugs.
