How to Design Your Own Power Ranger

The "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" began as a television program in the late 1980's and expanded into a line of videos and toys for children. Even though the show is no longer in production, Power Rangers are still a popular costume design among children who enjoy the youthful superheroes. Designing your own Power Ranger costume is a great way to create a superhero costume with items you probably already have in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a unitard sewing pattern that offers the option of long sleeves and long pants so your Power Ranger costume is one piece. Get Lycra fabric in the color of your choice to make the unitard, and white fabric to accent the costume.

If you don't care to make a unitard, a motorcycle body suit should be a suitable substitute.

    • 2

Pad the inside of the unitard or body suit with polyfill to add muscle definition to the arms and chest.

    • 3

Cut one large diamond shape from a sheet of white fabric. This will serve as the chest plate worn by the early Power Rangers. The diamond will run from the collar to the belly button on the costume in length, and about half that in the width. Use fabric glue to attach the diamond to the unitard, then stitch it on to make sure it stays.

    • 4

Make a neckpiece by sewing a collar separate from the unitard. Take a strip of white fabric and wrap it around the neck to measure how large the collar must be. If you make the collar out of a stretch fabric, you can sew it into a circle and it will stretch to pull on and off. If you use a more rigid fabric, add snaps to the back of the collar so you can take it off and put it on.

    • 5

Create the helmet using a small bucket that's large enough to fit over your head. Cut out the bottom of the bucket and remove the handle. Cut a large, rectangular window for the eyes and a square large enough to expose your lips for the mouth. For the face shield that covers the eyes, cover a clear plastic sheet with window tint, or use a black marker to color a section of saran wrap, and secure that to the helmet you created.

If the bucket just doesn't look right, a bike helmet or a motorcycle helmet can fill in.

    • 6

Use silver craft foam to create straps for the helmet, a mouthpiece and a belt. The helmet straps are a 1-inch wide strip of foam that wraps around the helmet from one side of the face shield to the other. Shape your mouthpiece to look like lips, and glue them onto the helmet. You might want to cut a hole in it so it's easier to breathe while wearing the helmet. The belt is a strip of foam 2 inches wide that wraps around the waist of the costume.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Power Rangers had several colors and uniforms. Check with your child for his favorite before you get too far into a homemade design. White gloves and white boots were part of most Power Ranger suits.
