Christmas is right around the corner and most of us are wondering how we will be able to add the expense of parties and Christmas gifts to an already stretched thin budget. It is not necessary to forego your Holiday fun even in these hard economic times. Most of us are accustomed to the mad spending spree that takes place every year. This year take time to consider the real meaning of Christmas and cut back on the spending. You will be happy in January when you are not facing a mountain of debt that you cannot pay.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Creativity
  • Desire for change
  • Commitment to downsize your holiday
  1. Step 1

The first thing you should do is have an open and honest dialog with your family. Your children are not stupid and even though you try to hide your finances from them, they know that money is tight. Young children do not have great expectations unless you encourage them. Children are happy with the simplest toys. I remember when my children were small they invariably loved the cheapest gift they received.

The second thing you can do is look around for some nice hand made gifts you can make yourself that will be inexpensive, while appearing to be very expensive. Hobby and craft stores offer many ideas that you can put together if you shop wisely. Most people really enjoy receiving a gift that comes from the heart. The knowledge that you took the time to create a personal gift will warm their hearts.

  3. Step 3

Creating these flower accessories cost about $1.50 each. Adding an inexpensive pin to the back makes it easy to wear. This is merely a suggestion for what to look for in a nice gift. Your personal taste will offer many ideas once you think about it.

  4. Step 4

You may choose food gifts, home made jewelry, scrap book, accessories for hair or clothing, blankets, or afghan, you are only limited by your creativity and your budget.

Are you a speciality cook? Give coupons for a special dish, dinner, or dessert to be redeemed when the recipient chooses.

Do not let the cost of Christmas gifts keep you from enjoying your holiday, or giving gifts during this economic downturn. Allow the joy of the season to inspire you. You will be glad you did.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your project is within your skill set. Do not allow frustration stop your progress.
  • Take a realistic look at your Christmas list and choose appropriate projects for each person on the list.
  • Have fun.
