Reduce the Risk of Alzheimer's

Mental decline is common as we age, but did you know it doesn't have to occur to you? Researchers are making progress in learning how to reduce our risk of Alzheimer's disease. Find out what simple tasks you can do to protect yourself.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

ENGAGE YOUR BRAIN - participate in activities that keep you mentally sharp. Some of these Alzheimer's preventive activities may include: crossword puzzles, brain teasers, reading a book, learn to play a musical instrument, or learning a new language.

  2. Step 2

GET ACTIVE - Stay physically active by doing things like walking, biking, short hikes, of strolls in the park. Stay socially active by joining a club, staying in contact with family members, and friends. Plan dinner date, attend theatrical events, or get together to support a local cause.

  3. Step 3

EAT RIGHT - Maintain a healthy weight, get adequate levels of vitamin D, eat plenty of fish or other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids. Don't forget your coffee! Research has shown that 3-5 cups of coffee day can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease in some people.

Tips & Warnings
  • Type 2 diabetes will increase your risk of Alzheimer's disease. Talk to your doctor about other preventive measures.
