Step 1
Measure first. Using a pencil, draw the shadowboxes on your wall. A good rule of them is to position the box 3 inches below the chair rail (this article assumes you have a chair rail), 3 inches above the baseboard trim, and 3 inches from each other. Make the boxes as long as you wish.
-
Step 2
Buy trim. There are many options (visit Lowes or Home Depot) to use for shadowbox molding. Shown here is a trim called base cap. Buy enough to cover the lengths and widths of all of your boxes plus a few extra feet.
-
Step 3
Cut the trim. Using a miter saw (either powered or non-powered) cut the trim at 45 degree angles to the specified lengths and widths of your boxes.
-
Step 4
Adhere trim. Apply wood adhesive (Liquid Nails or Loctite Powergrab) to the back of the trim and adhere to the shadowboxes drawn on the wall, completing one shadow box at a time. Gently hold the trim to the wall for a few minutes to help the adhesive stick.

Step 5
Paint. For a rich, classic look, paint your new shadowboxes white to offset the wall color.
