Make a tasty coffee drink in your own kitchen to save money.

The Caramel Macchiato has often been cited as the most popular drink served at Starbucks. With vanilla syrup and a healthy dollop of caramel on top, it's a highlight of the day for many devoted coffee drinkers.

In today's economy, though, the four dollar price tag on a Venti (and who doesn't want a Venti?) is getting a little steep. For those who can't do without their Caramel Macchiato fix, but want to save a little money, here's a quick and easy way to get the same, rich flavor at home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Coffee
  • Coffee maker
  • Caramel
  • Caramel or vanilla syrup
  • Microwave oven
  • Whisk
  • OR espresso machine
  1. Step 1

Start with good coffee. For an authentic Starbucks flavor, use a Starbucks bean. For variations, use other high-quality whole-bean coffee if possible.

  2. Step 2

For the coffee and milk portion of the drink, either brew up a latte with a cappuccino maker, or use this simple technique for a surprisingly foamy result:

Fill your mug a third to one half full with milk. Put the mug in the microwave for 30 to 45 seconds. When the milk is heated, add vanilla syrup (or caramel for even more caramel goodness), and whip the milk and sweetener with a whisk until a healthy foam has developed. This method often provides a warmer drink with a tasty, light foam.

If using a cappuccino maker, add the syrup carefully before adding the coffee to keep from disturbing the foam.

  3. Step 3

Add caramel to the top. In my world, the more caramel the better. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Raw sugar is a good substitute for vanilla syrup, adding a slightly different taste.
  • The better the coffee, the better the final product.
  • This drink can be addictive.
