Clean Your Flute After an Illness

How should we clean my child's flute after he or she has been sick? This is a question that I have gotten many, many times over the years. While some people will tell you that it is very unlikely that germs will be able to live on cold metal, I know that I feel better after thoroughly cleaning my flute. It's not a bad idea to clean your flute thoroughly from time to time anyway, and what better time than after you have been sick. In this article, we will learn an easy way to clean your flute after being sick.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Carefully pour a little rubbing alcohol on one corner of your cleaning cloth. You just need the corner to be wet, not the entire cloth. You may wish to pour the alcohol over a sink to minimize mess.

  2. Step 2

Thread the alcohol soaked corner of the cloth through your cleaning rod.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the cloth over the cleaning rod with the wet part on the outside.

  4. Step 4

Push the cloth covered rod through the head, body and the foot joints of the flute. You may wish to go through each piece of the flute 2 times.

  5. Step 5

    Remove cloth from cleaning rod.

  6. Step 6

After cleaning the inside of the flute, use either the same cloth or another cloth to carefully wipe down the outside of the flute. To do son, pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol onto the cloth.

  7. Step 7

Let the cloth dry for a minute until it is damp, but not soaking wet.

  8. Step 8

Carefully wipe the outside surfaces of the flute with the alcohol dampened cloth. CAUTION: Avoid touching the pads as you wipe down the outside of the flute.

  9. Step 9

Return your flute to it's case, and wash the cleaning cloths.

  10. Step 10

Your flute is now thoroughly cleaned.
