Most children, by nature, do not look forward to doing their homework. However, establishing a good homework routine is important to your child's school career. These tips will help your child have a structured environment to get homework done in a timely fashion.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A well lit, clean and quiet space
  • A homework basket filled with necessary items for school
  • Your child's homework
  • A snack
  1. Step 1

Give your child a set period of time to unwind from school. Kids need a mental break. Try not to give too much time as kids tend to get out of the "school mode." A half hour to 45 minutes is usually a good amount of time to relax before starting homework.

  2. Step 2

Make a healthy snack to give to your child while he or she is doing their work. The nutritious food gets their mind working and the snack entices them to sit down and munch. Try not to have a snack that is too messy as they will be working on papers that should stay neat.

  3. Step 3

Provide a clean, well lit area for your child to do their work. It is very important that your designated area is not filled with distractions. Keep the T.V. off and try to keep noise at a minimum.

  4. Step 4

Make a small basket that holds your child's needed tools for homework. Keep pencils, pens, erasers, scissors, glue, crayons and markers in the basket. Kids can get easily distracted when they have to keep getting up to find necessary items. When homework is finished your basket can be neatly tucked away until it is needed again.

  5. Step 5

Be available to help your child when you are needed. Homework can actually be a fun way for parents and kids to bond. The good habits that your child establishes now, will be a great foundation for later!
