The motion picture 2012 starring John Cusack, Danny Glover and Woody Harrelson depicts the end of the world. The movie 2012 is based upon an ancient Mayan legend that foretells the end of time in the year 2012. That is the time when the calendar ends and all will become nothing according to the legend. The Mayans were not the only ones to think that the earth would meet its demise at this point in time. The great profit Nostradamus also told of the end of history in one of his poems that are called quatrains. Although it might seem futile to try to build a survival plan for such a global catastrophe as this, there are other events that you can be prepared for. Hurricanes, earthquakes and floods all can provide one with similar survival challenges and the key to making it through such events is preparedness. Here are a few simple steps that you can take to help insure your family's safety during a natural disaster.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Have enough canned, non-perishable food and bottled water stored to last you and your family two weeks to a month. One of the biggest problems in a natural disaster is people getting sick from drinking contaminated water or eating spoiled food. Diseases can spread rapidly through inadequate nutrition supplies.

  2. Step 2

Have a safe room designated in your home. Make this one room where you store all of your emergency supplies a small, structurally sound room without windows if possible. In the event of an emergency, move your family to this room to protect you from winds, water and whatever else Mother Nature can throw at you.

  3. Step 3

Don't forget other supplies. You will need things like battery operated radios, lights and cooking plates. Always keep several extra sets of appropriate batteries on hand as well. Make sure electronics stay dry. Extra clothes and shoes are a must as well. If you are licensed and skilled, a firearm might not be a bad idea either. Invariably, after a natural disaster, there will be people out looking to pilfer your stockpile for their own use. A little protection from these predators can go a long way.
