Hot stone massages are very popular these days. You can buy specially selected rocks for this purpose, but you can just as easily pick and prepare your own stones.

Traditionally, basalt stones are used for hot stone massage. These are stones formed downwind of a volcano, and they are known to retain heat longer than any other stone. However, there is no reason other stones may not be selected. Below on instructions on how to pick and prepare rocks for use in a hot stone massage.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, you will want to go to a location where smooth stones can be found. Any site near water is ideal, such as a rocky beach or riverbed. Alternatively, a rock tumbler may be used to smooth rougher stones.

  2. Step 2

Look for stones which are smooth, flat, and hard. At least one side of the stone must have a flat base so that it doesn't roll off the massage recipient.

  3. Step 3

Try to select stones which are black, or dark in color. These will retain more heat, and be more effective.

  4. Step 4

While you generally want large stones, you should try to pick stones of varying sizes which may be used on different locations on the body. You will need between 30 to 50 stones for typical use.

  5. Step 5

Once you've selected an assortment of stones, you will want to prepare them for use. First, wash the stones well, and boil them for 5-10 minutes in boiling water. This is done to sterilize them, and remove any stubborn dirt or debris.

  6. Step 6

Before using the stones, rub them with massage oil, such as jojoba or almond oil. The stones will darken as some oil is absorbed into the surface. This will improve the texture of the stone, and help them to conduct heat.

  7. Step 7

After oiling the stones, wash them with soap and water, scrubbing them well with a clean toothbrush or vegetable brush. You should repeat this after each use. The stones are now read for use.
