Drinking glasses that turn cloudy may be caused by detergent or hard water deposits. Changing to another detergent may prevent future cloudy buildup but it will not remove cloudiness from glasses already affected. Hard water is another culprit that causes a filmy accumulation on drinking glasses. Hard water is resistant to soap, and scale deposits will eventually cling to the glass. Follow these helpful tips to clean cloudy film from drinking glasses and restore them to their original beautiful sparkle.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Soak cloudy drinking glasses for one hour in warm white vinegar. Do not boil the vinegar. Use a nylon kitchen scrub to remove the film. Wash in warm soapy water, rinse and dry the glass.

  2. Step 2

Apply cheap white toothpaste to the glass. Scrub the glass with a toothbrush or soft bristle brush. Wash the glass to remove toothpaste, rinse and dry the glass.

  3. Step 3

Add a small amount of ammonia and dish detergent to a bucket of hot water. Allow the glass to soak for 30 minutes. Wash the glass thoroughly, rinse and dry.

  4. Step 4

Apply a layer of petroleum jelly to the glass. Allow the glass to sit with the petroleum jelly coating for one day. Wash the glass thoroughly, rinse and dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ammonia gives off strong fumes and is not recommended in a confined space. People with breathing problems should not use this method. Keep children and pets away from ammonia.
