How to Use Compaq V2000 Recovery Partition

The Compaq Presario V2000 notebook comes with a recovery partition that stores important drivers, file structures and programs on a special partition that can often survive physical damage to a drive. Your Windows operating system also uses this partition to store images of your computer's state at predetermined intervals as well as when you install new software. You use the images stored on your recovery partition to roll your computer back to a time before a serious error has occurred.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" button, located in the lower left corner of your desktop. In Windows XP this is labeled with "Start" and a small Windows icon; in Vista it is a large Windows icon.

    • 2

Select the "Run/Search" command. In XP this is "Run," while in Vista it is "Run/Search."

    • 3

Enter the command "msconfig" without the quotation marks into the Run/Search dialog box. This opens the system configuration utility. This is a powerful utility in all versions of Windows.

    • 4

Left-click the button labeled "Launch System Restore." This opens a new window with a calendar on it. Each highlighted date on the calendar represents a system restore point.

    • 5

Choose a date on the calendar when your computer was still operating without problems. You want to choose the date that is closest to the current date.

    • 6

Click "OK/Confirm" to begin the system restore.

Tips & Warnings

  • Compaq Presario V2000 Notebooks come with Windows XP or Vista preinstalled. If you upgrade to Windows 7, you can still use your recovery partition to store important data. Having a system recovery partition means that you do not need to use system restore discs for most errors.

  • Do not edit files directly on your recovery partition as you risk destroying those files on the partition by accessing it. By default the recovery partition is not accessible except to the system administrator, and even then the files are hidden and protected. It is recommended that you do not change these settings.

This does not access the recovery partition, only the Windows System Restore facility. The recovery partition is created during manufacture and serves to restore the computer to factory condition, softwarewise. It is never altered by Windows in normal circumstances.
