1
Spread the large garbage bag out to help catch any shreds of foam the cutting may produce, then place the foam pillow in the middle of the garbage bag. If the pillow is larger than the garbage bag, make sure the section to be cut is in the middle of the garbage bag. Spread another garbage bag if necessary to accommodate the size of the foam.

2
Mark the line to be cut with a marker, using the yardstick to keep the line straight. Kneel on the pillow with a knee to one side of the line to be cut and your free hand on the other, squashing the pillow flat from both sides; this will make it easier to cut evenly.

3
Place the utility knife at one edge of the line to be cut. In a slow, smooth movement, run it down the length of the line. There's no need to press hard; as long as the blade in the knife is reasonably sharp, it should cut through the foam easily.

4
Repeat the cut as necessary until you've sliced all the way through the foam. If it is very thick you may need to cut three or four times, working deeper into the pillow each time. You can gently separate the edges of the cut with your fingers to make room to work the utility knife down into it.

5
Make any other necessary cuts, repeating the process above, then put the freshly cut pillow aside. Gather the edges of the garbage bag, folding any foam scraps into it, and dispose of it in the garbage.
