Sharpening stones can be an outdoorsman's best friend. Used for cutting, digging and even self-defense, there is no substitute for the convenience and safety of having a sharp knife. As long as he has the right sharpening stone and the right oil, the hunter or camper is never without one of his most important tools. It's extremely important to the health of the stone and the knives it sharpens to keep the equipment clean. Determine what type of oil was used in the last sharpening. Specialized honing oil for use on sharpeners comes in two types: water-based and petroleum-based. Cleaning processes can vary depending on what type of oil has been used.

    • 2

Clean the sharpening stone with warm water if the oil is a water-based solution. Pour warm water into a bowl, bucket or pan. Add dish detergent or another mild soap to the warm water and mix so that it produces suds.

    • 3

Soak the sharpening stone in the soapy water for up to ten minutes, then use the same water to wash the surface of the stone. Scrub with a small scrub brush or toothbrush to remove all oil residues. Wipe the stone dry with a clean, soft cloth.

Use an oil mixture to remove petroleum-based sharpening oil from your sharpening stone. Pour kerosene into a bowl, bucket or pan and allow the sharpening stone to soak for up to ten minutes. Scrub the remaining oil away with a toothbrush or scrub brush. Soak the bristles of your brush in the kerosene for an additional aid. Wipe the stone dry with a clean, soft cloth.
