Instructions

    • 1

Wear a pair of surgical gloves (or substitute cleaning gloves) and a surgical mask before you enter the infested area. The diseases in rat feces and urine can become airborne and one inhalation of the disease can cause you to become sick.

    • 2

Place mouse/rat traps around your house, especially in the areas where you notice the most droppings. You can choose a humane trap that allows you to set the rat free once it is caught or purchase the standard rat trap that kills the rat immediately. No matter what, it is vital to remove all the rats from your home before the clean-up process.

    • 3

Seal all possible entry points the rats have access to. They can crawl in through walls, underneath walls, through cracks in the windows and doors and anywhere else an opening to the outside is available. Thoroughly check the premises and seal off as necessary. You may need to replace a screen, add caulking or even replace walls and insulation, depending on how big an infestation you have.

    • 4

Sweep up the rat droppings after you are sure the rats are gone for good. Do so with a broom and dustpan that you feel comfortable throwing out once you are finished cleaning. Fecal and urine residue will remain on both so it is best to throw them away.

    • 5

Place the droppings in a plastic bag and tie it closed. Discard the bag and take your trash out immediately. You do not want any residue lingering in your house.

    • 6

Purchase an enzyme-based cleaner and use as directed. Most require you to spread the cleaner thoroughly and evenly over the affected area and let it stay. The cleaner will disintegrate and disinfect both the fecal residue and urine.
