How to Caulk Around Ceramic Tiles

Sealing and protecting the interior wall structure of a home from moisture damage is imperative. The grout on newly installed or repaired ceramic tile shrinks as it cures. The shrinking causes small cracks that water can seep through daily. Sealed grout works well between tiles, but applying it to the areas between the tile and the bathroom fixtures invites permanent water damage and costly repairs. A little silicone caulk will provide the protection you need for many years to come. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove dirt and debris along the areas needing caulk by running a stiff-bristle brush over them. Purchase small tubes of 100 percent silicone caulk. Cut the lid at a 30-degree angle to help aid in the application.

    • 2

Squeeze out a bead of caulk approximately 8 to 10 inches long. Smooth the caulk using your finger or a plastic spoon. Continue caulking in small increments until you have filled the entire area joining the sink or tub with the silicone.

    • 3

Remove the shower handle by popping off the decorative cover plate. Gently pry beneath the edge of the cover plate with a standard screwdriver to remove it. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the handle from the shower wall. Pull the metal plate loose that covers the rubber wall seal by prying with the standard screwdriver. Peel the rubber seal away from the wall, and add a thin bead of silicone caulk around the edge that rests against the ceramic tile wall.

    • 4

Press the rubber seal against the wall, and cover with the metal plate. Reattach the handle, and secure it to the wall with the screw. Use the handle end of the screwdriver to reinstall the decorative plate in the handle by tapping gently.

    • 5

Run a bead of silicone caulk around the shower waterspout. Smooth the line with your finger or a plastic spoon. Allow recommended drying time for the caulk before using the bathroom fixtures. (See References.)

Tips & Warnings

  • It is important to remove all traces of old silicone caulk or the new caulk will not adhere, states Mark J. Donovan, home improvement expert at homeadditionplus.com. (See Resources.)

  • Keep the area well ventilated from the caulk fumes. Follow label directions for drying times for the caulk.
