How to Thread a Curtain Rod

Choosing the right window treatments can take time, but putting them up doesn't have to. You can thread your curtains onto their rods quickly, and your room will look like a professional finished it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Install the curtain rod hardware so that after you thread the curtains on, you can hang them immediately.

    • 2

Iron your curtains so that they will not look wrinkled when you hang them.

    • 3

Hold the curtain rod in your left hand and the curtain in your right, or vice versa if you are left-handed. If the curtain is very heavy or the rod is very long, it may help to sit down or have someone help you. The back of the curtain should face away from you.

    • 4

Use your right hand to feed the curtain onto the rod. If you are using rod pocket curtains, use the second pocket, not the top pocket (which is a decorative pocket that forms a ruffle when shirred). Be careful not to catch the rough edges of the curtain rod on the fabric, because it may snag and cause a pull. If you are using curtain rings, clip them all in place before sliding them onto the rod so you can space them evenly. For tab-top curtains, lay the curtain on the floor and place the rod at the top so you can tie each tab.

    • 5

Hang the curtain rod once the curtain is fully threaded onto it. Step away from the window to evaluate the curtain. If it is unevenly shirred, carefully even out the shirring of the curtain along the rod. Don't take the curtain down to do this; you'll get better results from doing it in place because the curtain won't have a chance to slip as you rehang it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the edge of your curtain rod is very rough, cover it with masking tape before sliding the curtain on. If you are using a decorative rod with large finials, unscrew them before putting on the curtains, and screw them back on before hanging the rod.

  • If your curtains have grommets for the curtain rod to slide through, make sure to get a rod in the correct width. Grommets will not stretch to accommodate a wider rod.
