How to Keep a Cat Out of Potted Plants
Most every cat owner has experienced the unmistakable clumps of dirt on the floor, strangely withering plants, and slightly off center containers that can only mean one thing--your cat has discovered the potted plants. Cats love to dig into, nibble on, and play around potted plants. Potted plants may also become your cat's favorite new litter box, which can result in the death of your plant. Keeping your cat out of the plants can be challenging, but with a little information and extra effort it can be successfully done.

- Aluminum foil
- Pencil
- Decorative stones
- Cayenne pepper
- Dry yellow mustard
- White flour

Clean up the mess, eliminating any evidence the cat was ever near the plant. If he used it as a litter box, remove any and all waste. Replace any lost dirt.

Cover the top of the soil in the pot with aluminum foil.

Use a pencil or similar object to punch holes in the aluminum foil to allow water to reach the soil.

Place your choice of stones onto the foil. This will weigh the foil down and prevent it from being moved by a cat.

Combine 2 parts cayenne pepper, 3 parts dry mustard, and 5 parts white flour. Dust the plant with this mixture to further deter cats from the plant.

Tips & Warnings
Be sure to reapply the cayenne pepper mixture after watering the plant, as water will wash away the mixture.
