How to Apply Fiberglass Resin to a Surface

Fiberglass is a very durable, lightweight material that is used in many applications such as boats, showers, pools and even cars. Layers of dry fiberglass mat are applied using a resin to bond the layers together and become a solid material. Fiberglass resin requires a catalyst to promote the hardening process. Working with fiberglass is a simple process that can be done without having to hire a professional. Professional fiberglass work can be very expensive.

Instructions

    • 1

Wearing a respirator and safety glasses, sand the surface using a palm sander and coarse grit sandpaper. Scuff the entire surface thoroughly until there is no shine left. The better the scuff is, the better the fiberglass will bond to the surface.

    • 2

Wipe the entire surface clean with a rag and acetone. Remove any grease oil, or dust that is on the surface. Any grease or oil on the surface can cause a weak bond.

    • 3

Mix the fiberglass resin with the catalyst following the directions on the containers. Determine the amount of resin by the size of the area where you are applying the resin. Use a small bucket and a stir stick to mix the resin. When the resin turns to one solid color, it is ready to be applied.

    • 4

Dip the felt roller in the resin mixture, and apply it to the surface. Evenly apply the resin mixture for the best results. The heavier you apply the resin, the thicker it will be. Let the resin cure until it is hard and cool to the touch.

    • 5

Sand the surface with a fine grit sandpaper to remove any burs or sharp pieces of fiberglass that may be sticking up. You should be able to rub your hand over the surface without catching any burs.
