Decide where you want to hang the lights. Are you going to outline all the hard lines of your house? Dress up the windows or frame the porch? Are you going to decorate any trees?

    • 2

Make sure you have enough Christmas lights to cover the area you want to decorate. Double check that all the lights work by plugging them into an outlet inside.

Extend the ladder and have someone stabilize the bottom. Climb the ladder and clip the string of lights to your gutters. Do one string of lights at a time. If you are going around windows, you can use a staple gun to hold up the lights. If wrapping a tree, simple lay the string of lights on the branches.

Plug one end of the lights into an extension cord and the other end of the extension cord into an outdoor outlet after all the lights are connected and clipped to the house or tree.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are many different kinds of Christmas lights (large and small bulbs, dangling icicles, white and colored, blinking, etc.), select a certain type and stick with it. Coordinated Christmas lights are much more appealing than a mish-mash of varying lights. Use an automatic timer to avoid leaving the Christmas lights on all day and night, racking up your electricity bill.
