How to Purchase Pre-made Cake Decorations

Cakes are very versatile desserts. A cake can be turned into nearly anything the baker wants. You can make a cake that calls to mind a person, place or even an exotic animal, such as a giraffe. One of the easiest ways to decorate a cake is with pre-made cake decorations. Purchasing such decorations requires advance preparation in order to get the results you want. Does this Spark an idea?

Decide on the type of cake you want to make. Sheet cakes are made from a flat, rectangular layer of cake. Ice cream cakes are, as the name implies, made from ice cream. Bundt cakes are ring-shaped with fluted sides. Layer cakes are composed of two or more layers, typically with a filling inside. Wedding cakes are elaborate cakes usually composed of several cakes that are designed to be served during a wedding reception.

Decide on the type of pre-made cake decorations that suit your project. There are many choices available for purchase. Fondant is a rolled icing that is placed on top of cakes in order to create a smooth surface. Fondant can be dyed and shaped into many different items, such as animals. Marzipan is a paste made of finely crushed almonds and sugar. Marzipan also can be shaped into any item you like. Candied flowers are flowers that have been sprinkled with sugar in order to preserve them. Other items you can purchase include signs made from candy that spell out phrases, such as happy birthday, and elaborately crafted royal icing flowers.

Purchase the pre-made decorations. You can buy items online from specialty bakers. You also can buy many items in your local bakery. Grocery stores and crafts stores often sell pre-made decorations.

    • 4

Transport the cake decorations carefully. If you buy them at a store, ask for a separate box with padding. The box will help you avoid crushing the decorations. Store them in the back seat of your vehicle away from other items that could slide. Many cake decorations are very fragile.

    • 5

Store the decorations properly. Fondant can dry out if not stored in a cool, dark place. Marzipan can crack easily. Candied flowers might lose detail and color. Ask the bakery for the best way to store the decorations. Most pre-made decorations should be stored in your pantry away from heavy items that might fall on them.
