How to Schedule a Computer to Shutdown From the Command Line

Windows has technology that enables you to shutdown a computer from the command line. It saves keystrokes and is a much faster way to reboot your computer. In order to reboot your computer, you must use the Shutdown.exe command. There are many switches or variations possible when using the Shutdown.exe command.

      Click the "Start" button and type "cmd" in the instant search field of Windows Vista or Windows 7. Press "Enter". If you are using Windows XP, click "Start", "Run", type "cmd" and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

      Type the following in the command window to shutdown your computer at a specified time, on the same day: "at at 20:00 shutdown.exe /l/s/y/c." Your computer uses military time. This syntax is basically saying "at 8:00 PM, shutdown my local computer and force any open programs to close so a shutdown can be successful."

      Type the following in the command window to shutdown your computer on a daily basis: "at 20:00 /every:M,T,W,Th,F shutdown /l /r /y /c." This syntax is basically saying "at 8:00 PM, shutdown my local computer on each day of the work week and force any open programs to close so, a shutdown can be successful."
