How to Shut Down Your Windows Computer From the Command Line

Windows has technology that enables you to shut down a computer from the command line. It saves keystrokes and is a much faster way to shut down your computer. In order to turn off your computer, you must use the Shutdown.exe command. There are many switches or variations you can use when using the Shutdown.exe command. As you get more advanced, you can tinker with the other switches.

      Click the Start button and type "cmd" in the instant search field of Windows Vista or Windows 7. Press "Enter." If you are using Windows XP, click Start | Run and type "cmd" and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

      Type the following in the command window to reboot your computer: "shutdown.exe /s."

      Type the following in the command window if you want to specify a time limit before powering off your computer: "shutdown.exe /s /t 30." In this example, we are powering off the computer but waiting 30 seconds to initiate the shutdown.

Tips & Warnings

  • Open the command window, and type "shutdown.exe /?." This displays all the switches you can work with from the command line. For example, if you wanted to shut down your computer and specify a time limit and a message, you would use the following syntax: "shutdown.exe /s /t 45 -c This Computer Is Shutting Down."
