Cast iron pans are preferred because they provide consistent and even heating. If the cast iron pans are properly cared for, they will last a lifetime and longer. These skillets can be passed down for generations. When the cast iron is seasoned, foods do not stick. If you neglect the cast iron skillet and rust appears, you must remove the rust before you can use it again.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dish soap
  • Dish cloth
  • Vegetable oil (sunflower or canola)
  • Paper towel
  1. Step 1

Wash the cast iron pan in hot soapy dishwater. Only use a dish rag on the pan surface, not anything harsh or abrasive. Rinse the pan thoroughly. Dry with a paper towel.

  2. Step 2

Turn on the stove burner to low. Place the pan on the burner, allow the pan to heat up and dry completely.

  3. Step 3

Turn off the heat. Pour some vegetable oil on a piece of paper towel. Rub the paper towel over the inside of the pan, leaving a light coat of oil on the bottom and sides of the skillet.

  4. Step 4

Store in a cupboard uncovered. Do not set other pans inside the cast iron pan unless you place a piece of paper towel between the two pans.
