How to Design With Safety Pins
Creating crafts and jewelry with safety pins is an inexpensive way to personalize your accessories, making each piece one-of-a-kind. Safety pins can be purchased in large bundles, often with varying sizes, from craft stores for very little money. A great safety pin accessory is the simple brooch. Once complete, this colorful brooch can be pinned on jacket lapels, sweaters or other accessories such as purses to show off your personal style. Simple to create, this is a perfect family project.

1
Decide how many small safety pins you will need. Do this by sliding the hole at the top of the small safety pins onto the pin shaft of the larger safety pin. Fill the pin shaft completely, but make sure the small safety pins are still loose and able to swing back and forth. Ensure that the large safety pin can be closed before proceeding.
-
2
Remove the small safety pins from the pin shaft. These will be the pins you design with.

3
Begin pushing the seed beads onto the pin shafts of the small safety pins. If you want a specific design, such as an American flag or a heart shape, use specifically colored seed beads placed in the proper order. This may take some trial and error. For an eclectic look, use several opaque and transparent seed beads mixed together.

4
Slide the first beaded safety pin onto the pin shaft using the same technique as in Step 1. After the completion of each safety pin, repeat this step. This will give you a visual on how many beads you will need in a sequence if you are creating a specific design.

5
Attach the large safety pin with the dangling beaded small safety pins to a shirt, jacket lapel or other clothing. When attaching the brooch, be careful not to let any of the beaded safety pins slip off. Store the brooch with the large safety pin closed.

Tips & Warnings
Safety pins can be purchased typically in silver or gold. However, you can paint the safety pins any color you desire with specially made spray paint for metal objects. Make sure the safety pins are fully dried before beading.
