How to Remove Paint Glaze From Walls
Removing paint glaze from a wall is a tedious process, but not a difficult task. The wall should be washed down and dried before initiating the paint glaze removal process. Removing the paint glaze is only the first step in preparing the wall for a new coat of paint or wallpaper. Wearing rubber gloves and opening windows is highly recommended when using paint remover indoors. This project will take at least 2 hours for a standard size wall.

- Zip-Strip paint and finish remover
- Rubber gloves
- Putty knife
- Cotton rags or old towels
- Sponges
- Bucket
- Drop cloth
- Trash can
- Soapy water or standard cleaning solution

Put a drop cloth on the floor to protect floor coverings. Remove all shelves and decorations from the wall. Open the paint and finish remover and pour it in a bucket.

Put on rubber gloves and dip a sponge into the bucket. The paint remover will burn skin; long, sleeves and pants should be worn.

Smear the paint and finish remover liberally over one-fourth of the wall. Allow the mixture to stay on the wall for 20 to 30 minutes. The paint glaze will appear to bubble and loosen from the wall.

Scrape the putty knife over the treated section of the wall to remove the paint glaze. The putty knife will easily glide through the flaking mixture, and will not need to be pressed hard against the wall. This process will not harm drywall, paneling or plaster walls.

Wipe any excess from the wall and repeat process until all of the paint glaze has been removed. After the entire project is completed, clean the wall with soapy water or standard cleaning solution. The wall can be repainted immediately after drying. Using a base coat of Kilz is recommended before applying a new color based paint to the wall. Put all used rags and sponges into a trash bag immediately after use.
