Take the stopper out of the drain and inspect it. You'll probably find a buildup of hair and soap scum. Clean any debris off of the stopper and reinsert it into the drain. If the stopper isn't removable, remove the drain cover grate with a screwdriver and use a coat hanger to clean the stopper. Try to get the hair out of the drain and discard it, rather than knocking it off the stopper and into the drainpipe.

Place a piece of duct tape over the overflow drain. The overflow drain prevents your bathtub from becoming too full of water. Covering this will be necessary to create the air pressure to unclog the drain.

Use a plunger to attempt to unclog the drain. Place the mouth of the plunger directly over the drainpipe and briskly work it up and down while maintaining a seal. It will be helpful to first make sure that the surface of the tub around the drain is slightly wet. After several firm plunges, check around the drain to see if any debris has emerged. Have paper towels ready to clean up the mess before it runs back into the drain.

Use a chemical agent to clean the drain. Depending on the nature of your pipes and the type of clog you're fighting, pouring a chemical solution down the drain might be more or less effective than using the previously mentioned methods. There are plenty of fancy variations on this sort of product, but simple Drano (or a basic agent from a different brand), should do the trick.

Consider calling in a plumber. If all else fails, this might be your only option. Unfortunately, this could cost a substantial amount. If you live in an apartment complex or rental unit, check with your landlord----they might have a regular maintenance person who will service your bathtub drain at a discount.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a slotted plastic drain cap to prevent hair from clogging your drain.

  • If you choose to use a chemical cleaning agent, be sure to follow the printed label precisely. These products are very dangerous.
