Remove cardboard boxes. If you use your basement as a storage area, chances are there are stacks of cardboard boxes filled with treasures and keepsakes. To protect your things, and also to prevent the moldy basement smell, purchase plastic bins. Plastic, air-tight containers will prevent odors from creeping into your Christmas decorations and other goodies. Keeping cardboard, loose paper and books in the basement will only add to the smell.

Air out the basement. Use a dehumidifier to take excess moisture from the air. If your basement has windows, open them.

Fix any leaks that may be causing your basement to get wet and smell. Sometimes leak fixing is as easy as applying caulk to the outside foundation. Other times leaks require more in-depth solutions, such as pouring new concrete over cracks.

Mix half a cup of bleach with a gallon of water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and squirt walls, hard floors and other non-porous surfaces that will not be harmed by the chemicals. Use a brush to scrub away stubborn mold and stains.

For carpet mix one cup of borax with one gallon of water. Apply the cleaning solution to a sponge and scrub the carpet. Or use a carpet shampooer. If the carpet is riddled with water damage, consider replacing it or keeping the basement uncarpeted.
