Skunks are common throughout the United States. You will find them in the country as well as in suburban areas where they will scavenge for food in garbage cans along with opossums and raccoons. If you are unfortunate to have a heated run-in with a skunk, you or your pet could bring home an odorous reminder of the altercation.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Find the source of the smell. You will need to locate the items that have been contaminated by the skunk spray. If you or your clothing have touched other household items, you may have tracked it onto carpet, decking or furniture. If you can remove these items from the house, do so.

  2. Step 2

Mix the solution. In a large bucket or container, mix one quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and 1 teaspoon of liquid detergent. You can use laundry soap, dish soap or hand soap.

  3. Step 3

Soak the items in the solution. Place the contaminated items in the solution and let them soak for up to five minutes and then rinse in cold, clean water. Be forewarned that this can cause bleaching so you may wish to test the solution on a hidden spot if you are treating bright or dark colored clothing. You can use this solution on carpets, furniture or pets safely.

  4. Step 4

Wash floors, wood and other surfaces with bleach. You can treat outdoor areas such as your patio or deck, or inside areas such as floors, with household bleach. Mix 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water. Again, be aware that this could bleach the surface that you are treating. Rinse the bleach off and repeat as necessary until the odor is removed.

  5. Step 5

Open doors and windows to ventilate your house if the smell is inside. Once you've treated the source of the odor, there's nothing more you can do to remove the smell from your home except create an air flow, light some incense or scented candles and wait.

Tips & Warnings
  • Repeat soaking and rinsing until the smell is removed.
  • Do not use bleach on your pets if they are contaminated with skunk spray.
