Mice can carry disease and unwanted odor from their urine or garbage. Even if the mice are no longer in your home, the smell could remain for days. Removing such odor can be done easily and quickly with little cost by using household products. However, it's important to use products that will kill the bacteria that may cause the odor rather than using candles or air fresheners to simply cover the odor.       Locate any dead mice in your house. Wear plastic gloves, and place the dead mice into a sealable plastic bag.

      Clean your house and areas where the mice were found. Vacuum all carpet, mop all tile and clean the inside of your kitchen cabinets with disinfectant spray. If the odor remains in your carpet or hardwood floor, continue to Step 3.

      Pour 2 cups of vinegar into a spray bottle, and spray around the areas where the smell is the strongest. The vinegar is safe carpet and wood, but should not be used on furniture or leather. If you can smell the mouse odor on your carpet or furniture, spray the area once and let it sit for five minutes. Wipe up any vinegar spray using a cool, damp cloth.

      Place an odor absorber that is specific to pest and animal odors near the source of the odor. Odor absorber products include Fridge-It, Pet Odor Absorber and Visor Fresh. Consider lighting heavy-scented candles near the area.
