Tree braids are an extension hairstyle that's versatile and low-maintenance. Women can wear human hair extensions or synthetic hair extensions with tree braids. It's a good idea to consult with a professional before having tree braids done; she can advise you on which hair type to purchase, how long the style will last, how long the braiding process will be and different styles you can wear your tree braids in. Once your braids are designed, you can wear them for about eight to ten weeks.

How to Get Tree Braids in Hair

  1. Step 1

Work in sections no larger than one-half inch.

  2. Step 2

Use duckbill hair clips to create even parts and to hold hair out of the way that you're not currently braiding.

  3. Step 3

Fold a small section of hair extension in half and divide it into three even sections.

  4. Step 4

Apply this extension to your parted hair section, which is divided into three equal sections as well.

  5. Step 5

Braid your hair and the extension hair together for one-half inch.

  6. Step 6

Begin to work in an underbraiding motion.

  7. Step 7

Take a few strands of the hair extension and place it in the clip to hold them out of the way as you continue braiding.

  8. Step 8

At the desired braid length, keep the middle section of hair out. Use two fingers to pull the right and left hand sections of the braid into a knot, leaving the middle section to fall through.

  9. Step 9

Reinforce this knot by tying the hair into a second knot. Make it as tight as possible so that it holds.

  10. Step 10

Bring the strands that were previously placed into the clip down to blend in with the braided extension.

  11. Step 11

Repeat these steps over the entire head to create tree braids.

Tips & Warnings
  • For very curly hair, it is easier to braid if it is damp or wet.
  • Do not knot your hair when creating the knot. Make sure the knot falls past your natural hair. Avoid using mousse on synthetic hair extensions. This may cause matting.
