Bagpipes are instruments with enclosed reeds that make music by the constant flow of air fed over the reeds from a bag. Bagpipes are Scottish and Irish in origin and produce a unique, very Celtic sound. Finding a qualified bagpipe teacher can be difficult, but the Internet opens doors to all kinds of learning opportunities, including the opportunity to learn the pipes. If you enjoy bagpipes and have always wanted to learn to play, there's never been a better time to learn than now.

Things You'll Need:

  • Bagpipes or practice chanter
  1. Step 1

Select a website that offers bagpipe instruction. The website you select should cover the bagpipes from the basics to more advanced techniques, set up in a logical learning order. There are several pay sites that offer bagpipe instruction. One of the best is Bagpipelessons.com. You can take lessons online via webcam or order bagpipe lessons on tape. The lesson prices vary depending upon your method. The good news is, you can get free bagpipe lessons at Andrew Lenz's Bagpipe Journey. The website meets all the qualifications of an effective online bagpipe course without the expense.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a bagpipe or a practice chanter. The practice chanter is similar to a recorder, much cheaper than a set of bagpipes, and all you need to learn the playing techniques of a bagpipe. You can purchase a practice chanter at most music store. It's a good idea to use a practice chanter at first, especially if you are uncertain about your commitment to learning the bagpipes. Save the expense of bagpipes for later.

  3. Step 3

Visit Andrew Lenz's bagpipe journey and read the front page. You'll get a detailed overview of your instructor's background in bagpipe playing, including a look at his instructor, the bagpipes your instructor plays, and some of the performances your instructor has been in. This is a good way to get acquainted with the personality and skills of the person who will be helping you.

  4. Step 4

Begin by clicking on "Reference Articles" at the top of the page, then click on "Bagpipes Anatomy." This is the best place for a beginner to start. Reference articles are the basis for your instruction on Andrew's website. This is primarily a work-at-your-own pace presentation, although Andrew is always willing to answer questions and give advice. The lessons are arranged in categories that begin with instrument basics, move on to playing techniques, and then into bagpipe competition. Beginning bagpipe players should consider following the teaching articles in the order they are presented. If you need Andrew's assistance, you can click the "Contact Me" option at the top right of the page. Read the FAQ before contacting Andrew. Many common questions are answered thoroughly.
