How to Build a Domain Site

Your website, or domain site, is integral to your image online. Yet most people never give a thought about building their own website. In the early days of the Web, few people knew how to write the code to create a clean and good-looking website. However, today it is easier than ever to create a website.

Instructions

The first step you have to take in setting up a website is deciding on the domain name and who will host your site. (See Resources for some examples.) Make sure your domain name is unique to your niche, or if you are building a personal site, use your name or nickname. All major hosting companies now offer free domain names with their hosting packages. Another benefit of using a hosting company to purchase your domain name is the fact they offer turnkey website building templates.

Pick the template, which fits your personality or the business you operate. If you are a former U.S. Marine, you may want a military template. If you love the beach, then pick a beach template. On the other hand, if you are building a professional website, choose a template that is clean and professional looking and appropriate to what you are marketing.

Add content to your site. Since your site is new, the first page you will want to create is "About Me." This is the page where you write your story (bio) and add pictures and/or videos where your visitors will get to know the real you. Your hosting company will provide royalty-free pictures you can use on your site. They will also provide you a link where you can upload your own custom pictures. Now you are ready to write the "Front Page" where you will tell about your site. Once you feel good about what you wrote, you are ready to tell people about your site.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you decide to use an online content management system, remember you must "mask" your domain. If you do not mask the domain, people will see your online account name and not your domain name. This is a simple procedure and each hosting company has instructions on how to do it their way.
