To make the poncho, you'll need to know how to crochet a chain stitch to get started, both the single and double crochet stitches, and how to finish off a piece. Instructions

    • 1

Chain stitch row one to measure 14 1/2 inches long, or about 43 stitches. Your wrap will be made into an L shape with this first length representing to top edge of the back of the L.

    • 2

Turn the piece and begin double crocheting in the fourth chain from your hook, and continue across to the other end. Continue turning the piece and double crocheting until the wrap is 24 inches tall.

    • 3

Begin to chain stitch out from your last row, away from the main body, to form the foot of the L shape. Your chain stitch should measure 11 1/2 inches long, so add approximately 35 stitches.

    • 4

Turn the poncho and double crochet all the way across the width starting in the fourth chain from the hook. The full width of the foot or L should measure 25 inches.

    • 5

Continue to double crochet back and forth across the entire length of the back and foot until the foot is 14 inches tall, making the entire back length 38 inches tall.

    • 6

Start single crocheting around the entire border of the wrap starting from a corner after you finish creating the L shape of the wrap. Continue around until you reach the corner you began at and finish off.

    • 7

Put the wrap on by placing the inner corner of the L shape at the back of your neck with the outer corner of the L point down the center of your back. The wrap should come together in the front with the opening running from the side of your neck toward an armpit.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to create a closure for the wrap, consider adding large decorative buttons that will slip through the double crochet openings or attach frog closures. For a wrap that drapes across the chest and over your shoulder, simply make the back of the L longer before you begin to create the foot portion.
