How to Replace the Idle Control Valve on a Trooper 3.5

The idle control valve on an Isuzu Trooper 3.5 is located on the side of the throttle body. The throttle body sits on the back of the engine near the firewall. The valve controls the amount of air flowing into the throttle body and, subsequently, the engine. When this unit fails, you will not be able to run the engine at idle smoothly. You will notice either a higher than normal idle or your idle will constantly fluctuate. At this point, the only thing you can do is replace the valve.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood and locate the idle control valve on the Trooper. The control valve is secured to the side of the throttle body in the rear of the engine.

    • 2

Disconnect the battery. Remove the cable running to the negative battery terminal by loosening the nut on the negative cable with a socket wrench and pulling the negative cable off the negative battery terminal.

    • 3

Remove the electrical plug running to the idle control valve. Squeeze the top of the connector's release tab and pull the connector off the valve's electrical terminal.

    • 4

Remove the screws holding the idle control valve to the throttle body.

    • 5

Pull the valve off the throttle body.

    • 6

Install the new valve. Make sure that you align the mounting holes on the new valve with the mounting holes on the throttle body. Thread the mounting screws and reconnect the electrical connector.
