Nothing's more satisfying than a beer after a long, hot day. But few things are more disappointing than a warm one. If you're away from a fridge with no access to a cooler, keeping your beer cold while you exercise or hang out with friends can be a challenge. With a few simple items you probably have around the house, it's not hard to make one. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1 medium cardboard box (large enough to hold your beer)
  • 1 larger cardboard box (at least 4 inches taller, wider and longer than the medium box)
  • Packing tape
  • 3 garbage bags (white bags are better as they won't absorb as much heat)
  • Scissors
  • Ice

Instructions

    • 1

Put the medium box inside a garbage bag. Cut the bag so 1 to 2 inches come up over the top of the box. Tape the bag to each flap and cut a slit at each corner so that the box flaps will continue to move independently.

    • 2

Place a garbage bag inside the medium box, pushing the plastic into corners and all of the edges. It should conform to the interior shape of the box. Do not cut off the any of the bag; drape the extra plastic over the top edge.

    • 3

Wrap the outside of the larger box with packing tape; don't tape the top closed, simply cover each flap. This will strengthen the box so that it doesn't fall apart when you lift it up.

    • 4

Open the third trash bag and place it inside the larger box. Push the plastic into each corner and every edge so that the bag takes on the shape of the interior of the box. Do not cut off any of the bag; drape the extra plastic over the top edge.

    • 5

Fill the bottom of the large box with cubed ice. It should be 2 to 3 inches deep. Place the medium box inside the large box on top of the ice and fill the sides between the two boxes all the way to the top with more cubed ice.

    • 6

Place your beer in the box. Pour some ice around the beer. Pull the bags shut and close the lids.

Tips & Warnings

  • Chill your beer in the fridge first so the ice lasts longer. Just use the cooler to keep it cold. Keep the cooler out of direct sunlight to increase its efficiency.
