How to Fix Brown Patches in a Lawn
Several factors can contribute to brown patches in a lawn. Dog urine, improper mowing, buried debris and soil compaction can all cause brown spots. Tree roots may also pose a problem if they are competing with grass for nutrients. Even sun reflecting off of the home's wall will provoke loss of moisture and kill grass. Probe the brown spot with a screwdriver to see whether there is any buried debris such as rocks, lumber or bricks. Many times debris prevents grass roots from penetrating the soil and result in nutrient loss. Dig out any debris with a shovel.

Check your lawn mower for dull blades. When dull blades shred just the tips of grass, the tips will dry out quickly. Sharpen any blades yourself by following the instructions at rd.com (see the link below in References).

Look to see whether the brown patch is in an uneven area of your yard. Scalping occurs when the mower runs over areas that are a different height from the rest of the yard, which causes the excessive grass loss. Raise the mower blade when mowing this area.

Take care not to leave the mower on the yard. Heat exhaust and gasoline spills can kill grass. Leave your mower on a sidewalk or driveway.

Replace lost moisture from sun reflection by soaking the area with water. Set up a watering schedule for the brown patches.

Conduct a pH soil test on your brown patches to make sure that the area is getting enough nutrients. You can purchase one at a gardening supply store.
Remove the grass if the brown spot is caused by a tree root. This problem can't be fixed, but you can replace the spot with mulch.
