Things You'll Need:
- Garden stakes
- Masking tape
- Shovel
- Pencil
- Electric drill screwdriver
-
Step 1
Identify critical lighting areas where there are small steps, corners or edges that cannot be seen in the dark and may cause stumbling. Drive in a garden stake to mark each spot.
-
Step 2
Space the location of additional lights evenly between the critical areas. Mark each spot with a garden stake. Locate the position for pole-mounted solar lights on patio deck posts or an exterior wall. Mark each spot with masking tape.
-
Step 3
Ensure that each marked position has exposure to sunlight throughout the day. Cut back foliage that may block the sun’s rays or move the garden stake markers to a more exposed area. Pole-mounted solar light fixture positions may need to be moved to another side of the post.
-
Step 4
Dig a narrow hole where each marker is located, removing the marker. Make the hole deep enough to bury one-half the length of the solar light’s stake. Set the light stake in the hole, holding it in place as you backfill the hole with soil. Tamp well with your foot, add more soil and tamp again to hold the lighting stake firmly in place.
-
Step 5
Hold the pole-mounted fixture bracket in place against the post or wall and mark the screw holes with a pencil. Pre-drill the holes, then screw the bracket into place with an electric drill screwdriver. Attach the fixture to the bracket and tighten.
