If you have a VTech learning laptop for your toddler, preschooler or grade-school age girl or boy, then you know they're indispensable educational toys for kids. My own child's VTech baby laptop occasionally breaks down and needs fixing, especially with the mode switch. If you have a kids' toy laptop that needs repair, here is how you fix it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Turn the machine off for a while. If it works again when it comes back on, this may be a sign that the batteries have run down. Note if the sound has gotten weak and/or the lights don't work--another sign.

Replacing batteries on toys can be a pain because they're usually screwed in (for good reason--kids really do learn quickly how to open the case). Unscrew the battery cover and replace the batteries--many VTech models use 2AA or 3AA batteries.

See the Warning section for a caution about using rechargeable batteries with VTech learning laptops.

  2. Step 2

If the toy laptop still doesn't work, take out all the batteries and hold down the "on" button for 45 seconds. Then put in the new batteries again and test the machine.

  3. Step 3

Check the user manual for the location of the reset button, if there is one on the laptop, and press it to see if that takes care of the problem.

  4. Step 4

As a last resort, call VTech Customer Service at 1-800-521-2010 for repair in the U.S. if your learning laptop is still under warranty. If you are in Canada, the number is 877.352.8697. Include your authorization number with any returns.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to check that the batteries are oriented correctly.
  • VTech advises you not to use rechargeable batteries with their learning laptops, since the design and charge are often not compatible.
