1
Know what to study for the exam. Buy or borrow the HESI comprehensive NCLEX-RN review book. To find out what topics will be on the exam,Insert the CD-rom in the back of the book into a computer and look at the topics that show up on the screen. Those are the topics that will be the focus of the HESI exam. Now,go through the HESI book itself and take note of topics needed for the HESI exam that are not in the book, write them down and obtain books that address those topics.
-
2
Create a learning schedule. To do this, determine what chapters you need to study from the HESI book and the other books you have and then give yourself a time period during which you will do all your studying. It could be a month, two months or even three weeks. Next, decide on how many hours you will study per day and fit in the number of chapters you can read into those hours. Write down the days of the weeks you will study and fill in each day with the specific chapters you will read for that day. Do this for all your chapters.

3
Test yourself as often as you can. There are HESI style practice questions in the CD-rom behind the HESI book. Practice answering those questions as often as possible, and read the reviews and rationales of all the questions you got wrong. Doing this on a daily basis along with practicing NCLEX style questions will help you learn how to interprete the questions and increase the likelihood that you will select the right answers. When you create your learning schedule, include time for practicing HESI and NCLEX style questions daily.

4
Create a study strategy for yourself that includes, extra studying of topics that will increase your chances of passing. These topics should cover one or more areas that will be on the HESI test like drug calculations, delegation, prioritization or professional issues. Another strategy is to begin your learning schedule with chapters that cover your weak points.
