Step 1
If you ever see, or hear of, an animal being abused or neglected, call the A.S.P.C.A. immediately. You could be saving an innocent life.
-
Step 2
Keep an extra collar, leash, and small bag of treats in your car. The collar should be adjustable but not a choke collar. A rope will do for a leash. If you have these supplies in your car, you will be able to pick up any strays your meet. Take the animal to the nearest no-kill shelter or your local A.S.P.C.A. If you absolutely cannot stop, phone for help. Keep the appropriate number on hand.
-
Step 3
Volunteer at your local shelter. You may be cleaning cages, doing laundry, washing dishes, holding young or frightened animals, or walking dogs. Whatever you do it will be helping homeless animals as well as lessening the burden on an overworked staff.
-
Step 4
Donate to organizations that work with animals. You can donate cash or useful items such as old towels, blankets, sturdy chew toys, and food. Call your local shelter to see what is their greatest need. At holiday time remember these homeless animals and maybe donate a few extra treats.
-
Step 5
Click every day. If you go to www.theanimalrescuesite.com you will be able to donate 1/6th of a bowl of food every day to needy animals simply by adding your click. They will send you daily reminders so you cannot forget. At this site you can also vote for your favorite shelter, and the shelter with the most votes during a set period will receive a gift of $1000.
-
Step 6
If you are financially and emotionally able and your family is on board with the idea, adopt a homeless animal. These animals seem to instinctively know how lucky they are to have a forever home and are all the more loyal and loving for it.
-
Step 7
If you do not feel you cannot adopt, consider fostering. Shelters are often overcrowded and need loving foster homes to care for animals temporarily until permanent homes can be found.
-
Step 8
Do whatever you can to help straying and homeless animals. They need your help.

on 11/20/2009 Great advice on how to help straying and homeless animals. I seem to have inherited my mother's gene for taking in strays and homeless animals - we have four. Two of them were in puppy foster care together, with the Humane Society. They are great pets.

on 11/8/2009 wonderfull article. Any help at all, that someone can manage can make a huge difference in the life of a homeless animal. Now matter how small you might think it is. If we all did one thing, what a difference it would make. thank you for this wonderful article. 5*
