Step 1
Call your local police and fire departments and alert them that your dog is missing. Be sure to use the non-emergency lines as 911 is typically reserved for human emergencies only. Give them a description of your lost dog and provide them with your home address and contact information. If your dog has an identification chip tracker, then contact your vet and your dog should easily be located.
-
Step 2
Scan the areas around your home or wherever the dog was last seen. Recruit friends, neighbors and family members in your search. Look for your dog on foot, but also ride around in your car as well as you can cover more ground this way.
-
Step 3
Place fliers that contain your missing dog's picture and description around town. Put contact info and reward (if any) on the flier you are circulating. Email pictures to your friends cell phone's and ask them to circulate the picture of your missing dog around to others. Like in the AT&T commercial with the lost Jack Russell Terrier named Sarah, you will increase the likelihood of your dog being found.
-
Step 4
Place classified ads in the newspaper and online to increase the chances of finding your dog. There are many websites where you can post for free so utilize sites like Craigslist to find your dog.
-
Step 5
Dogs are attracted to scents they are comforted by- like the scent of their master. Keep toys or dog blankets outside of your home to help your lost dog find it's way back home. Bring along one of your dogs favorite toys when out searching as the scent and familiarity may help them find they way to you.
