We haven't gotten through Halloween yet, but the Christmas decorations are out! It's time to start planning on how to shop for Christmas on a budget.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get started early! If you can purchase items gradually instead of all at once it will reduce your stress level and make it much easier on your wallet.

  2. Step 2

Make a list. Make a list of people who you would like to buy for this year. Add their likes and dislikes, hobbies, etc. This will help you plan for your purchases.

  3. Step 3

Ask questions. Ask people what their "wish list" is for the holidays. This may not be an easy answer for adults on your list, but children will be happy to provide you with a "wish list"!

  4. Step 4

Research! This is a key step to making your purchases. Look online for daily specials, compare prices in sale ads as well as online. Sometimes you can find some great internet specials.

  5. Step 5

Check shipping charges. Sometimes when purchasing items online through a department store, you can have the items shipped to the store free of charge, rather than paying a hefty delivery fee to have them shipped to your home.

  6. Step 6

Check local stores for layaway options. Layaway is slowly making it's way back to the retail industry. There are some department stores that are now offering layaway options. This can be a great way to go when money is tight. You can make a small down payment on your selected items, then make weekly payments until the balance is paid off. Make sure all of the details are clear - some stores will charge a service fee, and also a cancellation fee if you decide not to go through with your order. Check before signing on the dotted line.

  7. Step 7

Make homemade gifts. If you find your budget is running low, then pull out your apron! Making holiday treats for those on your list is always an option. Decorative treats in holiday tins is a fun and economical way to give to those on your list.

  8. Step 8

Have a holiday pot luck lunch or dinner. Everyone is on a budget, and is looking for ways to save during the holiday. Instead of buying for everyone in the workplace or play group have a holiday party where everyone brings a dish to share. You could choose to do a $5 gift exchange, but make sure to make the rules upfront. This is a fun way for everyone to get into the holiday spirit without breaking the bank.

  9. Step 9

Have your budget and stick to it! It is very easy to get overwhelmed and excited when shopping during the holiday season. Make sure you stick to your budget. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. You'll be happier in the long run!

  10. Step 10

Enjoy! Take time to enjoy the holiday season. After all, that's what it's all about!

Tips & Warnings
