Finished Messenger Bag

Some brands of dog food come in nice, durable packaging. Ever wonder what you can do with that packing other than put it in a landfill? Interested in making a trendy, "green" messenger bag out of it? Read on!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

First, get a nice durable dog food bag. There are many brands that come packaged in a type of thick, plastic "fabric."

  2. Step 2

Cut the top off the bag, and then cut the remaining bag in half. This one was about 20 inches long, leaving a bottom that was 10″ high and a top piece 10″ high. The bottom will be the “body” of the messenger bag. Decide which part looks more attractive and keep that for the back since the front of the bag will be partially covered by the flap.

  3. Step 3

Examine your top piece and decide which portion will look best as a front for your bag. Cut this panel out. Flip the panel over and use a drinking glass to draw a curve to the bottom edges. Cut along curve.

  4. Step 4

This curved piece will be the flap of your messenger bag. As the plastic "fabric" will not fray, it is not necessary to finish the edges but you may do so if you wish.

  5. Step 5

Pin this flap to the back of your bag and sew it on. Just for reference, I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

  6. Step 6

Turn under a small hem all along the bag edge (1/4 inch is fine) and stitch in place. Now it’s time to make the strap.

Using the remaining portion of the top of the bag to make strap. I cut the remaining piece width-wise in half and then sewed them together to make one long 5″ wide piece.

  7. Step 7

Turn under a small seam allowance on each edge, then fold the piece in half and sew the seam shut. This makes a strap about 2.25 inches wide which is a nice width. Sew this strap firmly to the sides of the bag.

  8. Step 8

Your bag is now finished! Doesn't it look great? And knowing you saved yet another plastic bag from the landfill is a bonus! This is perfect for holding all your pooches toys or supplies for travel. Enjoy it!
