Many people enjoy watching their backyard birds gather, feed, and bathe. It can be relaxing to watch the tiny creatures and hear their beautiful songs. However, the cost of feeding wild birds can get pretty expensive. Here is a guide to help you save money on the cost of wild bird seed without losing any of your backyard birds.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plant a bird seed garden from a bag of regular bird seed. In time, the seeds will germinate and grow into plants that produce even more seeds. All you have to do is invest in the initial bag of wild bird seed.

  2. Step 2

Buy a higher quality seed. Buying a higher quality wild bird seed can actually save you money because in most cases you are getting more seed for your money. More expensive bird seed brands usually use less fillers in their product and therefore there is more actual seed in the bag.

  3. Step 3

Do not fill the bird feeders every day. Less seed in the feeder will make the birds find the seed that they spilled on the ground. They do not go hungry, and you do not waste seed.

  4. Step 4

Try feeding your birds alternatives to wild bird seed like nectar, or bread pieces. Many people do not eat the end pieces to a loaf of bread, and many species of wild birds love torn up crust.

Research the wild birds that you find in your backyard and learn about what kinds of seeds they eat. Then, buy the each of these seeds in bulk to mix your own wild bird seed. It is cheaper to buy the ingredients and make your own custom mix than it is to buy a pre-made mix. You can store the extra mixture in watertight containers for later use.
