These are a Christmas tradition in my family. The recipe has been passed down for generations. They are delicious, and very festive. Making these cookies is a great thing to do as a family!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • 2 tsp anise extract
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1-2 Tablespoons corn syrup
  • 2-4 Tablespoons water
  • food coloring (opt)
  • sprinkles (opt)
  1. Step 1

    Preheat oven to 375

  2. Step 2

Mix enough powdered sugar and water to make a glaze that will not run. Add corn syrup for a nice shine. You can add food coloring for different colored glazes if you'd like, my family doesn't.

  3. Step 3

In a large bowl , combine flour, eggs, shortening, sugar, anise, and baking powder. Mix by hand to a stiff dough.

  4. Step 4

Roll dough into 1" balls. (This is how my family was taught, my husband remembers them being in strips, or logs.)

  5. Step 5

Place on an ungreased cookie sheet about 1/2" apart.

  6. Step 6

Bake for 10 minutes, or until bottoms are lightly brown, then allow to cool on a wire rack.

  7. Step 7

Top with glaze. This is when you can sprinkle on the sprinkles if you decided upon it. My family prefers white glaze with rainbow sprinkles, but you can be creative.

  8. Step 8

Now enjoy with a nice tall glass of eggnog, or a mug of hot chocolate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cookies with crack slightly, but should not crack too much.
  • Best when enjoyed as a family (or group of friends of course)
  • This will make 2 dozen cookies.
  • Do not overcook. Overcooking will make the cookies get very dry.
