How to Plant Variegated Bamboo

      Choose the location for the bamboo. The species varieties for variegated bamboo include both shade-loving and sun-loving types. Pay special attention to the sun preferences of your specific bamboo type when choosing a location. If you want the bamboo as a border, select a location leaving approximately a foot between the bamboo and other garden plants to allow for spreading of the roots or rhizomes.

      Dig up the bed or prepare the container for planting the bamboo. When digging a bed, add in some good-quality potting soil or fertilizer and mix it in well. Break up any large clumps of dirt as you work. If you are planting bamboo in a container, fill the container with a good-quality, well-draining potting soil. Dig deeply enough to accommodate the roots or rhizomes of the plant. Typically a good depth is 6 inches.

      Plant the bamboo. Place the roots or rhizomes of the bamboo into the loose dirt. Mound the soil up around the base of the plants. Pat the soil into place firmly around the roots, adding additional soil as needed. Water the plants thoroughly.
