How to Make a Rice & Herb Neck Roll

Relieve sore, aching neck muscles with an herbal relief pillow. The aroma of the herbs aids relaxation, while the warmth emanating from the heated raw rice eases soreness. You can use whatever herbs you like, but lavender, chamomile and eucalyptus oil especially aid relaxation. Herbal pillows can be made in any size, but small rectangular pillows are useful for the neck and for shoulders and other sore areas, as well. Use new fabric or recycle scraps to make your neck roll.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut a rectangle, 13 inches by 16 inches, from muslin or linen. Cut a second rectangle, 14 inches by 16 inches, from decorative fabric. Fold each of the rectangles in half, lengthwise.

    • 2

Stitch two of the open edges of the muslin rectangle closed, leaving one short end open. Turn the rectangle right side out. Repeat with the decorative fabric.

    • 3

Mix 2 pounds of raw rice with the dried herbs of your choice. If you use essential oils, add them one drop at a time. When the rice has the desired aroma, mix well.

    • 4

Fill the muslin bag with the rice mixture. Tuck the raw edges of the open end inside the bag, and hand-stitch closed.

    • 5

Turn under the raw edges of the decorative fabric bag and hem, but do not sew closed. Trim away any loose threads.

    • 6

Cut a two-inch length of hook-and-loop tape. Position inside the open end of the decorative bag and sew in place.

    • 7

Slide the muslin pillow into the decorative bag and close it with the hook-and-loop tape.

    • 8

Microwave your finished neck roll for one minute to warm it before using.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use plastic snaps or buttons instead of hook-and-loop tape to close your cover. Remove the cover and wash it when it becomes soiled.

  • Be careful when you heat the pillow. It may become hot enough to burn bare hands. Avoid metal closures; they can't be used in the microwave.
