Instructions

    • 1

Clean the litter box daily. Remove the clumps and place them in an air tight container. Replace all of the litter once a week. Wash the litter box with soapy water every few weeks. This is especially important if you aren't using a liner.

    • 2

Use a liner if your cat tolerates one. This allows for easier dumping of used litter and keeps the pan clean. Add a charcoal filter to covered litter boxes. These pads are inserted into the top of the lid and absorb odors. Replace them frequently, according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Use deodorizing clumping litter and do not overfill the box. This leads to skipped cleanings and accumulation of urine at the bottom of the box. Cats prefer litter that is about 2 inches deep.

    • 4

Move the litter box to a well-ventilated area. Small, enclosed areas tend to smell much faster than open ones. Add an air filter to the room and use air freshener. You may also add litter freshener to the litter box.

    • 5

Put a second litter box in another location. This spreads out the cat's use and prevents odor from building in one area. A self-cleaning box is a good option. These litter boxes automatically comb through the litter moments after your cat has left, trapping the odor in a small container.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not drastically change your litter box setup at one time. Slowly acclimate your cat by making small changes over a few days.
