The valve cover has an important job for the engine: It keeps the valves protected and lubricated. If the valve cover gasket goes out, then the valve cover will leak out oil, potentially damaging the engine. Fortunately, replacing the valve cover gasket isn't a difficult job and should take about 30 minutes. This article discusses a 1998 Volkswagen Passat with a 1.8-liter engine, but the process is similar for many different types of vehicles.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Shop towels
  • Replacement valve cover gasket
  • RTV sealant or similar product
  • Replacement spark plug chamber gasket
  1. Step 1

Remove the valve cover trim piece using your hands. It's held in place by clips.

  2. Step 2

Unbolt the ignition coils and connecting wiring from the valve cover, using the 3/8-inch ratchet and sockets. Pull the spark plug wires with your hands to pop them out of place.

  3. Step 3

Unbolt the valve cover from the head using the 3/8-inch ratchet. The cover should pull up from the head with a little help from your hand.

  4. Step 4

Remove the stock gasket using your hands. Then clean the surface with a shop towel.

  5. Step 5

Clean the top of the head where the valve cover gasket sits, using a shop rag. It doesn't have to be perfectly clean, but you do want to move away any dirt or residual oil from the surface.

  6. Step 6

Place the new valve cover gasket on the valve cover. Apply a small bead of RTV sealant to the corners of the valve cover where it contacts the camshaft cap and tensioner.

  7. Step 7

Install a new spark plug chamber gasket by pulling out the factory one and putting the replacement in its place.

  8. Step 8

Place the valve cover onto the head, and tighten down the valve cover bolts using the 3/8-inch ratchet and sockets.

  9. Step 9

Reinstall the spark plug wires, ignition coils and trim in the reverse order they were removed.
